Olomouc is a statutory and university city in the Czech Republic, the Olomouc region, the Haná metropolis and the historical metropolis of Moravia. In the city of 10 336 ha live approximately 100 000 inhabitants and is thus the sixth most populous city in the Czech Republic. In its wider agglomeration, approximately 450,000 inhabitants live.

Olomouc was the center of Moravia in the Middle Ages, the third largest city in the Czech Crown (after Prague and Wroclaw) and the largest town in Moravia. Today it is not only the seat of the Archbishopric and Metropolitan Church of the Moravian Church, but also the center of the Orthodox Church in Moravia. In the field of judicial power, the High Court in Olomouc is an important institution. The Palacký University, the oldest in Moravia and the second oldest in the Czech Republic, the Scientific Library and the Slavic Grammar School, the oldest continuous high school in Moravia with the Czech language of instruction, underline the importance of Olomouc as an educational center.

Olomouc was an important defensive center, the seat of a strong military crew; in the middle of the 18th century the city was rebuilt into a mighty fortress. In the following years there were many barracks, drills, warehouses and other buildings that were used by the army even after the abolition of the fortress in 1884, during the time of the Czechoslovak Republic (when also an important airport in Neředín was established) even after the Second World War. Since 1968, a very large (occupation) crew of the Soviet Army was also in Olomouc. Until 2013 Olomouc headquarters was headquarters of ACR Joint Forces, until then the city was the main center of state defense.

For its atmosphere and historical sites, Olomouc is a popular venue for international conferences and festivals. Olomouc is famous for its historical monuments, the Holy Trinity Column has been listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2000, and its historical core is an urban conservation area, after Prague's second most important one in the Czech Republic.
