Olomouc Town Hall
In 1261, the Czech king Přemysl Otakar II granted. a city privilege that allowed the construction of a municipal house. Together with the construction of the town hall, the city council was founded and a market was added to the building, from which the city was charged. At that time the wooden provisional building of the town hall was realized during the years 1410-1411, but by 1415 other construction works were stopped because money went to defend the city from the Hussites. In the 40s of the 15th century the broken works were restored and the tower was roofed, the construction was finally finished in 1443.
Between 1849 and 1901, the town hall was the seat of the county court and other state institutions, the town's self-government, including the council and the mayor, was located in the nearby Edelmann Palace.
Column of the Holy Trinity
The column, which is 35 meters high, represents the highest sculpture of the Czech Republic and its small chapel. Since 1995, together with the Marian column and Baroque fountains, it has been a national cultural monument, and in 2000, as one of the top works of the Central European Baroque, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Because all the artists and craftsmen who worked on the pillar were Olomouc citizens, the column construction was also understood as an expression of local patriotism. The Olomouc Trinity Column became the top work of several artists and craftsmen, but it did not bring them much luck. The first to die during his construction was Vaclav Render, who managed to build only the first floor. In accordance with his will, all the assets he left after his death were dedicated to the completion of the pillar.
Only four years later, when Olomouc was besieged by the Prussian army, the Pillar of the Holy Trinity was hit several times by balls of Prussian works. Olomouc citizens, regardless of the possible danger, went out in the process of asking the Prussian general for his soldiers to shoot at the monument. General James Keith followed their wishes, and so the pillar of other damage was spared. Soon after the war, it was repaired and a cannon ball imitated in its stem, which reminds us of this event to this day.
Sloup dominates gold plated statues of the Holy Trinity accompanied by archangel Michael on the top and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on the stem beneath them. The base of the column, made up of three floors, is surrounded by another 18 statues of saints and 14 reliefs in decorative cartridges. Among these sculptures are the reliefs of the twelve apostles. On the lower floor there are 12 statues of luciferas.
