The Cathedral of St. Wenceslas
The originally Romanesque basilica from the first half of the 12th century was rebuilt in the Romanesque-Gothic style at the beginning of the 13th century. Other Gothic building modifications followed in the 13th and 14th centuries. Early Baroque presbytery was founded in the early 16th century. At the end of the 19th century the temple underwent a radical reconstruction in the Neo-Gothic style, which gave it its present form. Since 1995 the cathedral belongs to the national cultural monuments of the Czech Republic.
The cathedral represents a significant dominant of the city of Olomouc, especially its main tower, the height of which is 100.65 meters, making it the second highest tower in the Czech Republic (the first one belongs to St. Bartholomew's Cathedral in Pilsen) and the highest neo-Gothic tower in the Czech Republic. In the cathedral there is also the largest bell in Moravia, St. Václav.
Inside, there are, for example, the Renaissance Chapel of St Stanislav with the bronze tombstone of Bishop Khuen and the marble tombstone of the last Olomouc Přemyslids. On the northern side of the temple is a large Neo-Gothic chapel of St. Cyril and Methodius, Gothic sacristy can be walked into the Gothic cloister with the chapel of St. John the Baptist. The fresco decoration is the work of Jan Kryštof Handke.
