After the creation of the First Republic, on 6 November 1918 Brno was taken over to Czech hands. As early as December 12, 1918, the University of Veterinary Medicine in Brno, now the Veterinary and Pharmaceutical University of Brno, was the first university of the new state. Other college-style schools followed in 1919.
On January 28, Masaryk University was established and later Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry in Brno.
On May 26, 1928, the newly-built Brno Exhibition Center was opened by the Exhibition of Contemporary Culture in Czechoslovakia. An extensive industrial exhibition in the following year was also held on 31 August 1929 by the President of the Czechoslovak Republic T. Masaryk.
In 1930 the famous functionalist Villa Tugendhat was built and in 1936 the construction of the Brno dam was started, which lasted until 1940.
On January 22, 1933, the members of the National Communist Party made a fascist "Jewish Putsch," which was suppressed by the army.
