The Spilberk castle
The Spilberk castle is currated by Jan Zdráhal

Špilberk (German Spielberg, in hantecu Špilas) is a castle and fortress that forms the dominant of the city of Brno. It is located on the top of a hill of the same name, located in the Brno-střed district, in the west of the cadastral area of Brno.

The castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century by the Moravian Margrave (and later by the Czech King) by Přemysl Otakar II. and through many centuries has undergone many major changes. From the leading royal castle in Moravia, built in the Gothic style, in the second half of the 17th century it became a massive Baroque fortress, which was repeatedly unsuccessful. Its casemates were adapted to a dreaded prison at the end of the 18th century. In 1962, the castle, together with the surrounding park, was declared a national cultural monument. Currently, it belongs to the objects of the Brno City Museum, which is located here.
