China, the full name of the People's Republic of China (characters simplified 中华人民共和国) is a state located in East Asia.
With 1.4 billion inhabitants, China is the most populous country in the world, with an area of 9.6 million km² making it the fourth largest country.
China has become a new superpower thanks to its rapidly growing economy and military strength and the associated increasing influence in the world.
Since 1971, the PRC has been a permanent member of the UN Security Council with veto power when this status has been denied to the Republic of China.
The country has been led by the Communist Party of China since 1949. The People's Republic of China has already taken control of the former foreign colonies of Hong Kong and Macao. It also qualifies for the island of Taiwan and several other smaller territories, but these areas are administered by the Government of the Republic of China.
Beijing (Chinese: 北京; pinyin: Běijīng; Czech transcription: Beijing) is the capital of the People's Republic of China. As a centrally managed city at provincial level, it reports directly to the central government. Beijing, which for centuries has been the administrative and cultural center of the country, is home to the famous Tiananmen Square or the Forbidden City, a complex of palaces and temples formerly ruled by Chinese emperors. The total population of Beijing in 2007 exceeded 17 million, in 2011 already 19 million. In 2008, Beijing hosted the XXIX Summer Olympics.
