Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, the capital of the province of Barcelona. It lies on the Mediterranean coast in the east of Spain. It is the second largest Spanish city after Madrid (1.5 million inhabitants, nearly 3 million in the agglomeration). It is also known for its original buildings by architect Antoni Gaudi and his contemporaries.
Barcelona is the seat of the Archbishop, has several universities and colleges of technology and business, as well as a number of major libraries. It is an important industrial center of northeastern Spain, the surrounding region is very rich in raw materials. It was also the venue for the 1992 Olympic Games. Barcelona is one of the most important and most visited European cities. Its location and relative proximity to the French border makes it more accessible to many Europeans than the capital of the Kingdom of Spain, Madrid
