Frankfurt am Main  is a city located in the southern part of the German state of Hesse, which is the largest city and also the fifth largest city in Germany. It lies on the river Main.

Frankfurt is also nicknamed "Bankfurt" because it is the financial heart of Europe, with its headquarters of world-class banking institutions. This Frankfurt area is located on one bank of the Main River and is referred to as "Mainhattan". Frankfurt am Main is an important trade fair city and an important transport and internet hub for Europe.

 

Frankfurt am Main was first mentioned on 22nd February 794 in the charter of Charles the Great for Regensburg Monastery of St. Emmerama. In that document it was stated in Latin: "... Actum super fluvium Moine in loco nuncupante Franconofurd" - "displayed on the river Main in a place called Frankfurt." However, the continuous settlement of this hills has been proven since the early Stone Age. At this point, after the Roman military camp in Merovejovských time Franconian royal court.

 

Frankfurt is Europe's most important banking and stock exchange metropolis. Banks are also behind the birth of a new Frankfurt symbol - the so-called Skyline, which creates the latest skyscrapers as evidence of the economic strength, power and wealth of banks. The headquarters have been located here by the Bundesbank (German National Bank), Deutsche Bank, and since 1998 also the European Central Bank. The largest office building in Europe is the skyscraper of Komerční banka - Commerzbank (300 m including antenna).
